1604 Abraham Ortelius Map of Turkey Ottoman Empire – Turcicum Imperium.

This Abraham Ortelius antique map is from the Aresenius engraving of 1601 and issued by Jan Keebergen in his ‘Ausszug…Abrahami Ortely theatro’ in 1604. This Abraham Ortelius map of the great Turkish Ottoman Empire stretches from the borders of Hungary in the north west to the eastern edges of Arabia and Persia in the east. It also includes Egypt in Africa and all of the present day Middle East. The map measures 4.5″ by 3.5″, has excellent hand colouring, and is in good condition with a little dirt in the lower blank margins.

1595 Abraham Ortelius Map – Languedoc in France. This minature antique map is from the 1595 2nd Latin edition by Philip Galle. This very fine, exceptionally attractive map of Languedoc and Provence in France is elegant and well engraved. The region shown includes the cities of Arles, Avignon, Marseille, Monpellier, and Narbonne; the relative sizes of the towns are illustrated, there is detail to major rivers, and the map has a very decorative title cartouche, lovely swash lettering, and a scale of distance. 1667 Ortelius Map – Barbaria et Biledulgerid. This antique map is from the very scarce 1667 Italian edition of Ortelius’s Epitome published as ‘Il Theatro del Mondo’. This map of North Africa and the Mediterranean has interesting detail to rivers and lakes, and place names shown include Marocho, Alger, Tunis, Tripoli, Palermo, Roma, Genoa, Barcelona, Sevilla, Lisbona, Malta. A scarce and unusual little map. The map measures 4″ by 3″, has wash hand colouring, and is in good condition. The ink mark was caused by a crack in the plate when the map was printed. 1601 Ortelius Map – Carthaginis Celeberrimi Sinus Typus.This minature antique map is from the 1601 Philip Galle Latin edition of Ortelius’s Epitome. This map of the ancient city of Carthage and its modern day successor, Tunis shows excellent detail. Although little remained of Hannibal’s feared settlement, the broken aqueduct is noted. Other towns include Bona and Goletta while a decorative element has been added with a war galley firing in the Mediterranean Sea, north of the gulf. 1590 Ortelius Map – Palatinatus Bavariae Descriptio. This minature antique map is from the 1590 Philip Galle French edition of Abraham Ortelius’s epitome. This map of the southern German region of Bavaria is dominated by the River Danube. The orientation is with north to the left ( a common practice in early maps) so the river runs from the bottom to the top. Prominent communities are Regensburg, Neustadt, Bamburg and Nuremburg. 1601 Ortelius Map – Brandeburgens Marcha. This minature antique map is from the 1601 2nd Philip Galle Latin edition of Ortelius’s epitome. This map of the March or Margraviate of Brandenburg has attractive engraving and good detail. It is centred around the city of Berlin which was later to become the capital of a united Germany in 1870. The map extends from Stettin and the Baltic Sea in the north to Silesia in the south and from Trier in the west to the boundary of Poland in the east. 1604 Abraham Ortelius Map – Thietmarsia. This lovely minature antique map is from a German edition of Ortelius’s epitome published in 1604. The map of the historic independent republic of Dithmarschen (Schleswig-Holstein, between the Elbe and Eider rivers) shows a number of towns and cities including Brunsbuttel, Merne, Busen, S. Anne and Meldorp, and has illustrative detail to rivers, marshes and forests. The map has a scale of distance, a decorative title cartouche, and a nice illustration of a ship. The map measures 4″ by 3″, has later wash hand colouring, and is in good condition with some wear of the paper and engraving and the lower margin margin is narrow and uneven. This Abraham Ortelius minature map comes from the ‘Theatro del Mundo’ a very scarce 1667 edition of Ortelius’s epitome published by Scipion Banca. Titled Carthaginis Celeberimi Sinus Tipus this maps shows the cities of Tunis, Bona, Raba, Porto Farina, Goletta and Cuzia. These minature Ortelius maps are quite small measuring about 4.5 x 3 inches plus margins. Sold on eBay: Jan 31, 2011  Winning bid: US $24.99

Biography

 

Abraham Ortelius (Abraham Ortels) 1527-1598 was a Dutch cartographer/geographer and publisher of the first and greatest world atlas the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the whole World). This great atlas was first published in 1570 with a total of 53 maps. Abraham Ortelius’s atlas was re-issued up until 1612 in 7 languages, Dutch, Latin, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. In all there were 42 editions. The last edition having 167 maps.
